Temora Prepared For Big Turnout At 9s Comp
The Temora Dragons are gearing up to host their first League Tag 9s competition in March and event coordinator Nikola Henman says the club are hoping the carnival is a huge boost to the town.
Henman is a dedicated Dragon, having been involved with the Temora club for many years as a player and more recently as a committee member.
Despite not hosting an event of this nature before, she believes the tournament could be great for the club and the wider Temora community.
“We have never done anything like this before, so it’s a learning experience for us all,” Henman said.
“We are hoping to make it a really successful day for all involved. It would be a great boost for our little club and town of Temora.”
The 9s Tag Carnival will take place at Nixon Park on March 12th and games will have 9 minute halves with full league tag rules applied.
A big incentive to get involved is the prize money on offer, with $1000 going to the winning team, $500 to the runner up and a prize for the best player on the day as voted for by the referees.Henman says interest in the carnival has come from far and wide and she is hopeful the number of registrations will increase over the coming weeks.
“I’d like to see as many teams as possible register,” she said.
“We have had teams from as far as Group 7 interested and we’d love to see some variation to our normal competition.
“It would be an awesome experience to play teams from all around.
“For it to be a successful day, I’d like to see at least 14 teams register, although the more the merrier!”
Registering before 18th February will cost $260 and this will go up to $300 if registered after this date. Registrations close on Friday March 4th.
Henman explained the motivation behind hosting the event.
“Years ago, league tag teams had plenty of opportunities to play in knockouts and pre-season trial matches such as the West Wyalong Knockout, Young Knockout, West Belconnen 9s and more recently, the Group 9 9s, however this year there is nothing,” she said.
“I saw an opportunity for the girls to have a hit out and I hope that it is well received by clubs.”
Henman believes the event could be a great way for the league tag community to get behind the small, tight-knit community of Temora.
“It will be a massive weekend for our economy, including our struggling motels, coffee shops and cafes,” she said.
“They have been hit hard by COVID and we’d like to see it be a successful weekend for them too.
“We know it will be a massive undertaking, but totally worth it considering the benefits to the club and town.”
